Livelihood
Overview
Uganda’s population is according to the last National Population and Housing Census conducted in 2024 is 45.9 million (UBOS June 2024), with a per capita income of over US$ 1023. In the Acholi sub-region alone, the population is 2,047,118. The greater Northern Region which is an area of focus under this intervention has a population of 9,966,558 (Male 4,884,430 and Female 5,082,128). The national poverty rate is at 39% while the Acoli sub-region and the Northeastern region’s poverty index is at 71% multidimensional and monetary at 58% and 68% respectively according to Multidimensional Child Poverty in Uganda Summary report of 2024. Poverty undermines the fundamentals of human rights as poor people cannot claim or demand for their rights. For this, the Uganda Government initiated the Parish Development Model as the latest magic bullet to propel the 39% poverty population into money economy, by producing for stomach and market and generally into middle income level by 2040. Whereas under the PDM, direct soft loan cash of UGX 1 million is given to benefiting households at 6% per annual interest rate, the 39% poor section of the population must be mobilised and organised to reap the benefit of cooperative society, financial literacy, marketing, among others. Over the next five(5) years, BOSCO-Uganda will implement strategies to enhance the community’s livelihood and empower them to take advantage of the available development programme to take off to the money economy.
Most of the working population was in employment (52%) followed by subsistence agriculture (47%) with the least proportion (0.3%) in unpaid apprenticeship. Given that Uganda is predominantly an agricultural economy; more than half of the females (55%), residents in rural areas (54%) and children (84%) were in subsistence agriculture.
