My Internship Journey at BOSCO Uganda

My internship at Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach (BOSCO) Uganda was a transformative learning experience that bridged the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world practice. Working alongside experienced technical engineers, I participated in field assignments across Northern Uganda, where I gained practical skills in computer networking, renewable energy systems, and technical support. Every assignment contributed to BOSCO Uganda’s mission of providing reliable communication and internet connectivity to underserved communities.

Network Troubleshooting and Restoration

One of my primary responsibilities during the internship was assisting in diagnosing and restoring network services during system failures. These field experiences strengthened my technical skills in fault identification, network diagnostics, equipment maintenance, and teamwork.

Radio Maria Gulu Sub-Station

On 23rd June 2026, I participated in resolving an internet outage at the Radio Maria Gulu Sub-Station. Although the problem was initially suspected to be a fibre-optic cable failure, systematic troubleshooting revealed that the actual cause was an offline Access Point (AP). Using network diagnostic techniques, we verified gateway configurations, executed ping tests, identified the fault, restored communication between devices, and successfully re-established internet connectivity. This experience emphasized the importance of logical troubleshooting before replacing equipment or assuming external causes.

Opit Towers, Moro Hill

On 25th June 2026, I joined a technical team responding to a major network outage at Opit Towers in Omoro District following heavy rainfall. The outage affected communication services in Opit and neighboring areas, including Ngeta and Rackoko Towers.

Our inspection revealed multiple faults, including Error Code 03 on the backup power system, excessive battery voltage preventing the inverter from supplying power, faulty electrical cables, and a damaged MikroTik switch. Using a digital multimeter, we measured voltage levels, verified electrical continuity, inspected the power system, and assisted in replacing the faulty components. After completing repairs and conducting system tests, network services were successfully restored.

These assignments significantly enhanced my practical understanding of network troubleshooting, power system maintenance, preventive maintenance, equipment inspection, and fault restoration.

Renewable Energy and Power Systems

Reliable communication in remote communities depends heavily on renewable energy. During my internship, I actively participated in the installation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that power communication towers.

Working with solar panels, solar batteries, a solar charge controller, an inverter, connecting cables, and a digital multimeter, I assisted in assembling and testing solar power systems. The installation process involved connecting two solar panels in both series and parallel configurations, measuring output voltage, connecting batteries in series, verifying correct polarity and cable continuity, and integrating both the solar panels and battery bank with the charge controller and inverter.

I also supported preventive maintenance activities, including cleaning battery enclosures, repairing damaged wiring, reconnecting electrical cables, and ensuring safe installation procedures. These experiences strengthened my understanding of renewable energy systems, battery management, electrical measurements, and the critical role of reliable power in sustaining communication infrastructure.

Skills and Professional Growth

Throughout my internship, I developed valuable technical and professional competencies, including:

  • Network troubleshooting and restoration.
  • Computer networking.
  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) system installation and maintenance.
  • Battery bank, inverter, and charge controller configuration.
  • Electrical testing using a digital multimeter.
  • Equipment inspection and preventive maintenance.
  • Technical documentation and fault reporting.
  • Teamwork, communication, and workplace professionalism.
  • Adherence to electrical and occupational safety procedures.

Beyond technical skills, I learned the importance of effective communication, proper planning, teamwork, and maintaining spare equipment to minimize service downtime during emergencies.

Conclusion

My internship at BOSCO Uganda was an enriching and rewarding experience that greatly enhanced my technical knowledge and practical skills. It provided me with the opportunity to apply classroom concepts to real-world challenges while contributing to the restoration and maintenance of communication services that support education, healthcare, businesses, and communities.

The experience strengthened my confidence in network troubleshooting, renewable energy systems, and technical support, while reinforcing the value of teamwork, professionalism, and continuous learning. It has prepared me for future opportunities in Information and Communication Technology and inspired me to pursue innovative solutions that improve connectivity and community development.
